Summary

This guide explores how embracing minimalism through zero-bag travel can enhance your journey. While traveling with nothing may seem freeing, I’ll show you how traveling light, in the right balance, can help you explore more without the burden of heavy baggage.

Thoughts on Zero Bag Travel

While traveling without any bag at all is incredibly liberating, I’ve found that a 2-6L bag strikes the perfect balance for me. The core idea of zero-bag travel is to release the stress of worrying about possessions and luggage—it’s about freedom. However, if the lack of a bag begins to feel like an inconvenience or limit, it defeats the purpose of the experience. My challenge to you: see how minimalist you can go while still feeling comfortable, where the small sacrifices actually improve your overall travel experience.

Laundry: A Key to Traveling Light

A major part of zero-bag travel is managing your clothing while on the road. Laundry routines are essential when you’re packing light, and they allow you to extend the life of your limited wardrobe.

I’ll dive deeper into laundry tips in a future post, but for now, here are the basics:

  • Hand washing in a sink: It’s easy and effective. Simply use a bit of soap, soak, and rinse.
  • Rolling clothes in a towel: After washing, roll your clothes in a towel to squeeze out excess water. This helps them dry faster.
  • Hang drying: With quick-drying fabrics, you can hang your clothes up and have fresh clothes by morning.

Clothing: Versatility is Key

Merino wool is a go-to for minimalist travel—it’s breathable, odor-resistant, and dries fast. However, you can make do with whatever you already own as long as the pieces are versatile and functional. The goal is to pick clothing that doesn’t get dirty easily, fits multiple uses, and can be easily washed.

  • Tops:
    • Warm Weather: I bring a single polo shirt. It’s versatile enough to wear at the beach or to a nice dinner. I aim for one shirt that can serve all purposes.
    • Cool Weather: For cooler destinations, I opt for a long-sleeve shirt or base layer that can be layered under outerwear.
    • Cold Weather: In colder climates, I add a flannel or sweater for extra warmth.
  • Bottoms:
    • Warm Weather: A pair of hybrid shorts that are stylish enough for dinner but also double as swimwear is perfect.
    • Cooler Weather: I prefer technical pants that stay clean longer and are easy to hand wash.
    • Cold Weather: For extra warmth, I’ll add a pair of long underwear as a base layer.
  • Undergarments:
    • Boxers: I bring one pair of boxers and always pack one extra pair as a backup.
    • Socks: I always bring only one pair of merino wool socks. Due to merino’s antimicrobial properties, I can wear them a couple of times before needing to wash them, and they dry quickly, making them perfect for minimalist travel.
  • Outerwear:
A packable raincoat isn’t a must-have, but I enjoy bringing it. It’s lightweight, breathable, and comes in handy during unexpected rain showers. For different climates:
    • Warm Weather: I typically skip the outerwear, but having a lightweight merino sweater can provide an extra layer if needed.
    • Cool Weather: A lightweight fleece or merino sweater works well as a versatile mid-layer for extra warmth.
    • Cold Weather: I wear a long-sleeve shirt, a flannel or sweater, and a jacket to stay warm in harsher conditions.
  • Shoes:
    • Warm Weather: Barefoot sandals are ideal for beach days and offer great comfort.
    • Everyday Shoes: If I’m not at the beach, I opt for a pair of black barefoot shoes—they’re lightweight, versatile, and functional.
    • Winter Weather: Waterproof boots are essential in cold climates to keep your feet warm and dry.

Electronics

  • Charging Cable and Block: I always bring a charging cable for my phone and a charging block. Some charging blocks double as portable batteries, which adds versatility and reduces the number of devices you need.
  • Portable Battery: If needed, I bring a portable battery for extra juice on the go.
  • Phone: One of the greatest inventions for minimalist travel is the smartphone. It allows me to carry fewer items, as it serves multiple functions—boarding passes, maps, translations, and more. While I keep my phone use minimal, it’s an essential tool for navigating travel.
  • Earbuds: A pair of earbuds is a nice addition for transit, whether it’s for listening to music, podcasts, or taking calls.

Personal Items

I keep the essentials—ID, passport, cards, and cash—in secure zipper pockets. A small sling bag is useful for carrying these items, allowing you to easily access them when needed.

Toiletries

Minimalist toiletries are the way to go:

  • Toothbrush (I prefer a compact travel-sized one)
  • Toothpaste (tablets or powder work great; I use a travel tube)
  • Deodorant (stick form)

Most places provide soap and shampoo, but this is flexible if you prefer to bring your own.

Optional: A small medicine pouch with travel essentials (if needed).

Optional Items

While the focus is on minimalism, there are a few optional items that can come in handy:

  • Packable Tote: A packable tote can provide extra space if needed—perfect for groceries, the beach, or other day-to-day needs.
  • Small Bag or Sling: If you prefer carrying a few extra essentials like your phone, wallet, and camera, a small bag or sling is a great option.

Closing

Embracing zero-bag travel is not about stripping down to the bare minimum but finding the perfect balance between freedom and function. When you pack light, you free yourself from the constraints of excessive baggage, allowing for a more flexible, enriching travel experience.
